Imagine the beauty of a lush, green, healthy lawn, all I can think of while imagining it is fresh air and absolute tranquility. On the other hand, imagine dead grasses and brown patches arggh! Very disturbing.
Lawns are far more than just looks, they are beneficial to the environment. Unlike hard surfaces such as asphalt, wood, concrete etc, lawn grass helps clean the air, trap carbon dioxide, reduce erosion from storm water runoff, reduce temperatures, decrease noise pollution, improve the soil and helps preserve the whole ecosystem in the soil. The benefits of a good, healthy lawn cannot be overemphasized.
Arizona Lawns
Oh, the weather in Arizona is so hot!
Do you ever wonder how these grasses cope? We humans engage in lots of practices that helps keep our body temperature normal and our skin from burning up. What about our lawn? The major way to keep our lawn green, lush and healthy as we want it to be is to “WATER MORE”.
Follow me as we see reasons we should water our lawns more in Arizona.
1. The Weather is So Hot
Grasses could easily dry up under scorching heat, one of the major reasons we should water our lawns more especially at this time of the year us to prevent the lawn from drying up under the burning heat, thereby loosing it’s green colour, leaving brown patches and sand in our lawn. We all want a beautiful lawn, don’t we?.
2. Reduce the Temperature
Have you ever had the pleasant experience of walking bare foot in the yard and feeling how cool the grass is under your foot? Sure, I have.
That is not an illusion. Lawns play an important part in controlling our climate. Grassed surfaces reduce temperature extremes by absorbing the sun’s heat during the day and releasing it slowly in the evening, thus moderating temperature.
3. Help Respiration
Scientist has helped us understand that the by-product of plants is oxygen, and we need more of this by-product for better respiration. Imagine being in a place with so much of these oxygen producers. It’s utter bliss!
4. Preserve the Whole Ecosystem in the Soil
There is a whole new world in your lawn, right in the soil. These organisms play an important role in all of our natural ecological cycles (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, water and nutrient). We need to keep our lawns healthy in order to keep the tiny organisms in our soil healthy, indirectly keeping the human race healthy.
Methods of Watering Your Arizona Lawn
There are so many methods that can be used in watering our lawns. These methods save time, energy and give a perfect looking lawn.
(1) Eliminate leaks from the pipes
(2) Water the soil, not the leaves
(3) Install a rain barrel
(4) Update your sprinklers to water-efficient emitter
(5) Water in the early hours of the morning
Top Tip
You can test the moisture level in your lawn by inserting a screwdriver or digging a small hole into the lawn, feeling for moisture. If the soil is dry to touch, then your lawn needs watering. Try it and thank me later
I would end with a saying by Brian Vander Brug:
“Your lawn doesn’t need to die if you know you can hand-water with a hose any day.”
